She Rose Grief-Informed Care and Support
is for women carrying the weight
of an unspoken story, loss or experience.
There are some losses that don’t seem to fit into any typical category but are still very real and carry deep pain, even if others don’t think so. These are sometimes referred to as disenfranchised losses.
These losses and transitions are often deeply personal, are not socially validated as “real” losses and tend to be minimized, judged or overlooked. Some of these are, but not limited to:
Empty Nest, Divorce, Loss of a Pet, Job Loss, Miscarriage, Moving, Interpersonal Betrayal, Aging, Loss of Friendship, Loss of a Faith Community, Loss of Dreams, Health Changes, Midlife Challenges, Caregiving, Changing Family Dynamics due to Alzheimer’s.
Some losses can be categorized as stigmatized and are often viewed negatively or as taboo by society.
Think of the outward A worn in The Scarlett Letter, which was an intentional mark of disgrace meant to shame, cause fear and ostracize. Stigmatized losses increase feelings of guilt and self-blame leading to further isolation and a greater reluctance to seek help. These sensitive losses can include, but are not limited to:
Abortion
Regardless of the circumstances, the nature of the loss makes it difficult to safely express grief openly.
Sexual Abuse
Shame, trauma, and victim blaming are powerful deterrents to sharing.
Mental Health
Depression, Anxiety, etc., are often misunderstood and framed as laziness, lack of motivation or emotional fragility causing additional pain and loneliness.
These unattended wounds rarely get better on their own. By unpacking what is carried, wounds are given air to breathe and space to mend.
If losses and wounds are never processed, the pain can linger beneath the surface. This can show up in daily life in negative ways, taking a toll on emotional & physical health, withdrawal or disconnect in relationships or being stuck in negative patterns of coping. Instead of it being a constant companion, speaking it allows it to no longer have the hold it once did. On the other side of shame there can be freedom, growth and an increased sense of well-being.
